UN soldiers leave ex RCMP officer dying in a pool of his own blood in Haiti
two retired RCMP officers were driving near the slum Cite Soleil on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince when they came under attack. Mark Bourque was shot while driving with his friend Pierre Perreault. Perreault saw a nearby UN troop carrier which he thought would be their best chance for help and it very well should have been. instead of offering help the UN soldiers looked at them blankly from their troop carrier and even took pictures of the dying Bourque until Perreault shook his finger at them and they put the camera away. Perreault yelled at them for help in english, french, haitian creole, and even spanish but they still refused to get out of the troop carrier and help. Pierre Ratelle, who Bourque and Perreault were on their way to meet before being gunned down called Perreault on his cell phone while all this was going on. Ratelle informed his superior officer of what was going on, who in turn informed the UN's joint operations center. Bourque and Perreault arrived at an argentinian run hospital which was only five minutes from the scene of the shooting almost an hour after Bourque was shot, he was declared dead at 1108 am, 68 minutes after the 1000 am shooting. David Wimhurst, spokesman for the UN's mission in Haiti defended the soldiers response to the incident saying "They're not supposed to leave their station." wasn't the UN established to maintain peace and civility and to make sure that a conflict like WWII never took place again. how the hell are they ever going to be able to do that if they can't even offer CPR, first aid, or at least suppression fire to allow the injured to escape. its no wonder the americans don't take the UN seriously, and neither should Canadians any more. not that it has any basis for this incident but the UN soldiers were Jordanian in case anyone was wondering.
