i have seen this mentioned on several other blogs already this morning but i still feel i should mention it.
the integrated national security enforcement team or INSET which is composed of elements of the RCMP, CSIS, canada border services agency, citizenship and immigration canada, and provincial and municipal police services have arrested twelve men and five people under the age of eighteen. the suspects that were arrested posed a real and serious threat and had plotted terrorist attacks against unspecified targets in southern ontario. three tonnes of ammonium nitrate which is used in making explosives was also recovered by police. the explosion that destroyed the federal building in oklahoma city used only one tonne of ammonium nitrate, so the damage caused by a bomb made by these terrorists could have been significantly worse. although autorities refuse to speculate what the targets for an attack might have been, they will say that the toronto transit authority was not on the list. a CSIS building, the parliament buildings, as well as other highly populated public facilities were likely targets. the suspects are being processed in a brampton court, where security is very tight. police officers armed with M16 assault rifles, MP5 submachine guns, and bomb sniffing dogs manned three command checkpoints and spectators were recquired to remove their shoes.
i wonder what all those people out there that scoffed at the idea of canadian home grown terrorists think now? on ctv news net a few minutes ago they said that all those suspects arrested last night were canadian citizens or residents. although these people may say they were targeting canada because of our involvement in the liberation of afghanistan from the taliban, or because of our friendship with the united states, the truth of the matter is they targeted canada because they don't like our way of life, our free way of life, the canadian way of life.
